New York City Transit to Retire R-32s After 58 Years of Service



Nicknamed "Brightliners" because of their washboard-like stainless steel exteriors, these iconic "R-32s" subway passenger cars went into service in 1964 with a fleet totaling 600 subway cars.


With their state-of-the-art design, The Brightliners became an instant hit with New Yorkers. The R-32s is the last subway car featuring a front window for passengers to look through.


They were upgraded with A/C in the 1980s and scheduled for retirement in 2010 but remained in service for years longer.
