Eric Adams, elected as the 110th mayor of New York City, was sworn in at Times Square on Midnight, January 1st.

Covid-19 in 2022

Staffing shortages have caused thousands of flights across the country to be canceled.

Over 13,000 National Guard members have been activated to provide vaccinations, testing, clinical care, and other health care support tasks.

The FDA says that antigen tests may be less effective for detecting omicron.

The Westminster Kennel Club is postponing its 146th Annual Dog Show.


No Surprises Doc

The "No Surprises Act" places a ban on most surprise medical billing physicians, hospitals, and air ambulances; ground ambulances are not covered. 

Additional measures from the "No Surprise Act" require hospitals to give patients an estimated cost at least five days before the given procedure.


New Year, New Laws

Over 20 states are increasing their minimum wage.  Other new laws enacted in states across the country include:

California will have the nation's most strenuous living space standards for breeding pigs and will become the first state to require a $15-an-hour minimum wage for businesses with more than 25 employees.

Companies with auto-renewing contracts in Colorado will now have to provide customers with an easy way to cancel and give more time before being charged renewal fees.

Illinois Public School students are now allowed five days excused absences for mental or behavioral health with no medical note required.

Recreational marijuana will become legal in Montana.

Oregon will now allow for "natural organic reduction," or human composting.

Rhode Island

Insurance companies in Rhode Island cannot charge more than a $40 co-payment for a 30-day supply of insulin and are barred from subjecting insulin to a deductible.


The January 6th Attack on the Capitol

According to an ABC News poll, a clear majority of Americans think the January 6th Attack on the Capitol threatened democracy, with most Americans condemning it and believing that former president Trump is at least partially to blame.

Ghislaine Guilty

A federal court in Manhattan found Ghislaine Maxwell guilty on five of six total counts related to her role in Jeffrey Epstein's sexual abuse of minor girls between 1994 and 2004. Ghislaine Maxwell, aged 60, now faces up to 65 years in jail.


Alvan Bragg became Manhattan’s first black district attorney.

Airlines have formally requested that the FCC delay the scheduled rollout of 5G wireless service near major airports because of potential interference with radio altimeters.
